The AC motor is by far Nikola Tesla's most impactful invention. The AC current is one of 2 types of current. Direct current (DC) and Alternating current (AC). Direct current is transmitting power in a direct way, while Alternating current is 2 currents moving in alternating arcs that are 90° out of phase. This means that when one current is at max flow, the other is at zero flow, and vice versa. Nikola Tesla was the first person to make a motor which uses Alternating current. It was even called the Tesla motor for some time. AC motors now use 3 currents while back then, they used only 2.
AC has many advantages. Some of these advantages are:
The generators that are used for AC uses less parts than generators used for DC
AC doesn't have arcing like DC. AC used the process of electrical induction, which was discovered by Michael Faraday. The arcing was avoided by having the electricity do through one wire to another.
You can change the voltage with AC and you can also sent energy through very long distances.
Nikola Tesla tried to convince Thomas Edison that AC was better than DC when he was working with him. Thomas Edison rejected AC by saying that the world was used to DC and that AC was a killer current, meaning that in was really dangerous. Nikola Tesla left his job after 1 year. In 1893, Tesla and George Westinghouse(his backer), got a contract to provide the Columbian Exposition in Chicago power. This allowed Tesla to demonstrate his AC system. This was the first large-scale public event that showed of electrical devices. Nikola Tesla put on a spectacular show. He even sent 200,000 volt of AC through his body. He then challenged Thomas Edison to do the same with DC. With this, AC began to become more popular. Soon after though, police began using AC to electricute prisoners. Tesla suspected that this was Edisons doing to prove that AC was a killer current. In around the 1880's, people wanted a way to power street lamps and houses. Thomas Edison set up a DC system to power his neiborhood, and Nikola Tesla set up a AC powering system in his neiborhood. AC ended up being the more efficient current and it is still used today to transmitt power.
AC is one of the most important inventions of Nikola Tesla. It is a huge factor in our day to day life. AC is used everywhere today from your outlet at home where you charge your phone to delivering power to your houses and other buildings. AC is usually used for transmitting energy long distances, which makes powering buildings and houses alot easier. When AC was invented, it was used for many things like powering houses and street lamps. It made life alot easier back then with AC.
